Dear Internet Marketers,

A pro copywriter friend of mine showed me a weird
email he received recently. It said:

"I have a sales letter that I would like to use,
but it appears to be copyrighted. I was wondering,
if I e-mailed a copy of it to you, would you tell
us the necessary changes in order to avoid
copyright infringement?"

My friend was laughing about it, because the
statement "it appears to be copyrighted" made it
obvious that this person didn't realize that in
the U.S. - all sales letters are immediately
considered copyrighted to the person who creates
them.

Those who write sales letters aren't required to
go through some sort of formal copyright process.
If it's discovered that their ad has been
plagiarized, they reserve the right to sue.

That's why it's a very bad idea to copy a sales
letter word-for-word (it's called plagiarism).

So how do you write a good sales letter for your
business without risking copying someone else's ad
and getting sued…?

What About Those
"Copyright-Free" Sales Letters
or Sales Letter Templates?

A copyright-free sales letter is usually one
that's been "created" by a copywriter to sell some
sort of "marketing course". The course teaches
some marketing principles and contains some
"copyright-free sales letters - just plug in your
information and mail them".

The only problem with these "copyright-free"
letters is that they haven't actually been tested
for response. They're in there to "add value" to
the course - but ask yourself…are they really
valuable if they haven't been tested?

Nope.

Or, maybe you've seen those "fill-in-the-blank"
sales letter templates made for people who don't
want to create ads from scratch. They're touted as
the "lazy man's" way of (supposedly) having "a
"professionally-written" sales letter written for
you without having to pay for an expensive
copywriter." You just "insert your offer here" and
away you go...

Again, these are letters that haven't actually
been tested for response. Besides, how could they
be?

Think about it. These "template" kits contain
letters for every type of business under the sun
(retail, business-to-business, M*L*M,
professionals, service businesses, etc).

How could a copywriter who's just "coming up" with
these letters off the top of his head ever test
them for response, say, to the retail shoe
business? You think he's not going to mail out a
bunch of letters (at his own expense) to shoe
stores - just to see if his phone will start
ringing? Hardly.

You guessed it - if you fall for this stuff…you're
the guinea pig. His letters get 'tested' the first
time YOU mail one of them at YOUR expense.

Early in his copywriting career, Dan Lok agreed to
an "apprenticeship" arrangement with a Millionaire
Direct Marketer from Canada called "Mr. X".
Together they wrote hundreds of classified ads,
'advertorials' and sales letters for the many
direct marketing businesses that Mr. X owned.

But according to Dan Lok, he says "Mr. X. treated
me like dirt". Apparently Dan was learning from
one of the very best in the business, but the
working conditions were less than ideal:

"He didn't pay me squat and he made me rewrite
just about everything I ever wrote. If an ad got
great response, he took the credit, and if it
tanked, I got all the blame."

Nevertheless, during these years under the
"cracking whip" of Mr. X, Dan Lok managed to write
over 188 pages of ads that generated over $3
million dollars in sales.

Eventually, Dan "escaped" from Mr. X and went on
to produce some of the best-selling ads in
internet history for other clients. And just a few
years ago, Dan Lok "retired early" from his
full-time job being one of the world's
highest-paid copywriters - going full-time into
the Internet Marketing Business.

The letters that were created during the "Mr. X"
days were assumed to be lost forever…until one day
Dan stubbed his toe on a big box in his garage
and…
